Review: The Boxer Rebellion, Union

It was about 9:30pm and I had finally sat down at my computer to get some work done for the next day. I planned on listening to The Boxer Rebellion in the meantime and later write up a quick review on them for welikeitindie.com. Just about four songs into it, I told myself, “screw work, I need some wine!” A productive evening turned into me sipping a Merlot while watching a vampire movie, go figure.

This band likely named after a violent anti-Christian and foreign movement in China towards the late 1800’s (wow, I’d love to get their take on that one) is tight, versatile, and engaging. Their songs feature a prominent drum and melodic guitar accompaniment which almost seems to sing with the tunes at times with the many effects they put to use. The vocals fit nicely into the songs and the lyrics are stronger than most you hear these days.

Their style at times can feel like a mix of Muse and Coldplay with the vocals occasionally sounding like David Fort.

I found their album, Union, to be an easy listen from start to finish with enough variety to keep me from forwarding to another song or album. One of my favorite songs from that album is “The Gospel of Goro Adachi”. Give it a listen and you may just find yourself adding them to your play list.

Peace.

P.S. don’t forget to grab the free single “Evacuate” on iTunes.
