Q&As with Daniel Gleason from Winston Audio

Winston Audio’s debut The Red Rhythm has become one of my favorite albums from 09 so far. The most exiting this is that the guys are planning to be on the road most of this year, hopefully they’ll make it to Tucson. The current dates can be found on their myspace & here’s an esclusive interview with Daniel Gleason (Keys/Guitar/Vocals).
What’s your role in Winston Audio?
- I play keys/guitar and sing here and there. occasional songwriter. i book most of our shows and handle a lot of business related things at the moment as well
How many instruments to do you play?
- i play three different keyboards live. i have a set-up that includes a fender rhodes mark II, a nord electro that i use as an B3 organ, and a moog rogue for some low end bass synth. every once in a while we’ll break out the chaos pad and digital piano as well. i also play guitar on a few songs
Describe your music in 3 words…
- loud, aggressive, honest
Worst live show experience?
- honestly, all of our bad experiences have usually turned out to be alright in the end, or at least they make for humorous stories.. i like to think we make the best of the situations we’re in, whether or not thats really the truth. this one is the most recent though….we were on a short run with a band called all get out and we had a stop in johnson city, tn. our show was attended by exactly one person and didnt start until midnight. we decided to just have fun and set both bands stuff up on the same stage and would play one song each and then let the other band play, switching every song. our drummer would play a song with them and vice versa, sometimes both drummers would play on a show, which was never rehearsed beforehand. it was all very loose and kind of rediculous. eventually it ends with a blues jam for about 15 minutes that had no real structure and zach from our band and gordon from all get out just singing jibberish to it. we come to find out afterwards the whole thing was being broadcast on the local college radio station. im pretty sure it must have sounded like we were all black out drunk, it couldnt have sounded good at all. ive got a recording of it somewhere, but still havent listened. it was really fun at the time, but it was for sure the worst we’ve ever played.
oh, and we stayed the night in the venue, sleeping on the stage.
First record you ever bought and where did you buy it?
- it was a nirvana “live from the muddy banks of the wishkah” tape purchased the wal-mart in st.johns, michigan. i immediately started putting holes in my jeans and getting into trouble. one of the best decisions ive ever made
Last illegal download?
- its been a really long time to be honest. i personally havent downloaded anything illegally in probably 3 years. pearl jam’s self titled album i got a few weeks before it came out illegally, but i did buy it the day it came out. i think that was probably the last one
What are you listening to right now?
- ive been going through a big wilco kick recently. yankee hotel foxtrot has been playing constantly. also the shape of punk to come by refused, control by pedro the lion, and the eventually home by right away great captain!
im always listening to the other bands on favorite gentlemen as well. go to www.favoritegentlemen.com to check them out
Name one song you’d hate to have stuck in your head.
- welcome to the jungle – guns n’ roses
Name 3 things you need when you travel.
- laptop, cell-phone, and something to read, usually a comic.
What is your favorite thing you own?
- probably my record collection, and more specifically, ghosts of the great highway by sun kil moon on vinyl. not because its a limited edition or anything, it just brings back some awesome memories.
When you are out on the town, what is your drink of choice?
- i’ll drink pretty much anything, but if i have my pick its usually a whiskey and coke, and i like gentlemen’s jack a lot.
Stupidest thing you’ve done in the last 12 months?
- i saw a break in my neighborhood a few weeks and ran towards it like a complete idiot. fortunately, they jumped in a van and took off before i got to the house without even taking anything. they kicked down the door and got spooked i guess. i heard a loud noise in the house and ran to it to make sure everyone was ok, not realizing at the time the four guys who broke in could have easily beaten me up…..and when i say fortunately, i mean for them obviously
other than that, the usual stuff like driving down a one way street in the wrong direction with a van full of gear while on tour, that sort of thing.
Complete this sentence: In the future…
- we’ll be touring and writing for our next album. hopefully i’ll be able to quit my job at some point.
Tell us a fact about yourself that probably nobody knows.
- i really like the fray, my close friends dont know that one, they’d give me hell for it. i also sing in a hardcore band called anah aevia, a lot of people dont know about that
What’s next?
- releasing our record feb. 10th and then touring a whole lot. we’re all really anxious to get this album out and see where it takes us. we’re hoping to be on the road most of this year.
Don’t forget to grab this exclusive gem from the debut!
