Meet the Photons

San Francisco 8-piece Photons has swiftly won over new fans this year with an energetic brand of indie pop that features bassoon, glockenspiel, clarinet, & a full chest of bizarre instruments such as the electro-harp, soda-bottle percussion & the bulbul tarang (Indian banjo).

When Calvin Liu began to form Photons in early 2008, the original intention was simply to give band members an opportunity to learn a secondary instrument. (Liu switched from bass to drums, for example, but he has since returned to bass.) Soon realizing the potential for a band with so many members and multi-instrumentalists, Photons began to craft songs with heavy instrumental & vocal interplay & complex orchestrations.

After months of fine-tuning to find the proper balance between all 8 members, Photons played its first shows in August 2008. It quickly followed up with its eponymous debut EP in October 2008 — a release that would place Photons on many band watchlists from San Francisco to London to Barcelona to Copenhagen. Photons’ debut CD has since sold out.

The band is now releasing its sophomore Glory! EP, with each CD packaged with an issue of the new “We Are Photons” comic book series. Insound.com will exclusively pre-released Glory! EP last month. Next week on June 23, the EP will be available in digital formats & in boutique record shops nationwide.

Here’s your first listen.
