Starry Eyed
On February 22nd Ellie Goulding will release her new single “Starry Eyed” via Polydor. Her debut album Lights will follow on March 1st.
“Starry Eyed” is the follow-up to her first single “Under The Sheets” which was released in November on indie label Neon Gold. The low key release attracted a huge amount of attention, & led to an early appearance by the young singer- songwriter on Later with Jools Holland. Ellie was recently announced as the recipient of the Brits Critics Choice Award which she’ll collect on stage at the Brit Awards in February.
Ellie’s songs are built around big proper tunes that lift you up and spin you round, yet there’s something off-centre about them, something sparkly, filmic, haunting, odd. She mixes heartfelt emotion with other-wordly atmospherics, spins cool electronica into dreamy warmth. Her insistence on putting her guitar in every song, whether an acoustic cover (she’s done some amazing covers of Passion Pit’s Sleepyhead, Wolves by Bon Iver & Roscoe by Midlake) or a gorgeous song about new love gives her soaring electro-folk an earthed rootedness.
“Starry Eyed” was produced by Fin Dow-Smith, aka the electro-don Starsmith, who worked with Ellie on the majority of the songs on her album. The 2 hooked up originally through Myspace & something between them clicked. “Though I write on guitar, I hear the entire sound of songs in my head,” she says. “And Fin is someone who understands, who can really help me make that sound.” Fin & Ellie have an amazing rapport: he sent her just a few la la la sounds & she was instantly inspired to write ‘Starry Eyed’.
As well as supporting Passion Pit in March, Ellie has recently announced her first headline tour of the UK in March & April (all dates after the jump).
