New, Improved, LIVE: Studio session w/ Deerhoof

The Bay Bridged & New, Improved Recording are proud to announce the launch of New, Improved, LIVE, a monthly series of live studio sessions with top indie bands recorded at the New, Improved Recording studio in Oakland, California. The first session — posted earlier today — features the Bay Area’s own Deerhoof, and FREE high-quality mp3s, photos, & videos from the session are exclusively available right now HERE.

With a rich history in the Bay Area scene, it seemed only natural to invite Deerhoof in for the first New, Improved, LIVE session, & the group is known worldwide for its unconventional indie rock sound & consistently excellent albums, like last year’s Offend Maggie (Kill Rock Stars). Their N,I,L set includes highlights from their rich catalog alongside an exciting cover of “Let’s Dance The Jet”, an obscure song from the 1967 film The Day The Fish Came Out. As you’ll hear in the mp3s, the session captures the energy of the band’s live performances as expertly engineered, mixed & mastered by the New, Improved Recording team.

Session trcklst:

    01. Giga Dance
    02. The Great Car Tomb
    03. Let’s Dance The Jet (Download)
    04. Milking

Don’t forget, downloads of all 4 songs, photos, video, and an interview with Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier can all be found over HERE.

New Deerhoof video: “Offend Maggie”

“Offend Maggie” is the latest video from Deerhoof’s new album of the same title that came out October 7th on Kill Rock Stars. Directed by Vice Cooler (Hawnay Troof, xbxrx), the video showcases photographs of Deerhoof taken by Cooler over numerous years, all set against notable scenery in the bands’ hometowns of San Francisco and Oakland.

Cooler explains:

“The idea for the video was working with 10+ years of photos of my relationship with the band”

“That goes beyond music and has played a huge role in me moving out of the south and playing music in general, because they were the first people to encourage me to do so.”

In under two-and-a-half minutes you can see everything from John warming up pre-show to Ed admiring his first view of Mexico City through his hotel window. If you look hard enough, there is even a Holdypaws era Satomi playfully making a pyramid out of Deerhoof and This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb records at a vacant merch table. The video offers a unique glimpse into one of today’s most signifigant and surprising bands. After over a decade plus of friendship, Cooler has unintentionally documented much of the bands career, spanning everywhere from the early touring years into their current rise to notoriety.

One more Deerhoof video: “Family of Others”

This is the third video to come out from Deerhoof’s brand new album Offend Maggie. Eben Portnoy and Sara Magenheimer shot “Family of Others” through a beautiful old compound microscope at the Cape Cod Coastal Laboratories in Truro, Massachusetts.

Culled from local water samples, the cast of non-actors (microscopic plankton, crustaceans, and fly larvae) perform miniature domestic dramas in lush and grainy digital vignettes. Under the peeping eye of the lens, small mundane encounters and daily movements escalate into a choreographed dance extravaganza of Busby Berklee-esque proportions.

Sara and Eben are musicians and media artists currently on tour with Deerhoof as members of the experimental-pop band Flying. They are also on the road this fall with their new project, Fertile Crescent, & will be releasing a debut seven-inch/digital single in early November.
